The Punjab government has launched EcoBot, a new AI-powered chatbot designed to help citizens access real-time environmental updates. The service was introduced this week as part of an effort to improve public awareness about air quality and health safety. EcoBot is available on WhatsApp through a simple QR code. A price near $2,500 would make it the most expensive foldable in the market.   Why the iPhone Fold Will Be Costly   Analyst Arthur Liao from Fubon says global smartphone shipments may fall by 4% in 2026, landing at around 1.2 billion units. Alibaba.com has announced a major partnership with UPS Pakistan, aiming to make global shipping faster and more affordable for Pakistani exporters. The collaboration is designed to help local SMEs connect with buyers in more than 200 countries, offering better delivery speed, clear pricing, and improved tracking options. The development comes as Alibaba.com continues to expand its presence in Pakistan. According to the platform, the number of new Pakistani suppliers grew by nearly 50% between April and September, while monthly online orders surged by almost 150% over the past six months. More than 90% of Pakistani sellers already use the platform’s Trade Assurance feature for secure payments and transactions. Despite this progress, exporters have long faced issues such as high freight charges, slow shipping, and limited visibility of shipments. The new partnership aims to solve these problems by combining Alibaba.com’s logistics tools with UPS’s global delivery network. Under this alliance, Pakistani exporters will gain access to faster door-to-door shipping. Deliveries to the United States may reach in 2–4 days, while shipments to Europe could arrive within 2–3 days. Sellers will also receive exclusive pricing slabs designed to reduce overall logistics costs. All shipments will be fully trackable through Alibaba.com’s TrackSmart system, which is directly integrated with UPS tracking. Airblue has started a new international route between Islamabad and Dammam, strengthening air links between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has taken a major step in the telecom sector by approving the full acquisition of Telenor Pakistan and Orion Towers. The decision was confirmed during the company’s 9th Extraordinary General Meeting held on November 20, 2025.   According to the update shared after the meeting, shareholders voted in favour of PTCL buying 100% shares of both companies from Telenor Pakistan BV. The deal follows a share purchase agreement first signed in December 2023.   PTCL shareholders also approved a plan to arrange up to $400 million in financing. The funding may come from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Silk Road Fund (SRF), British International Investment (BII) and other global lenders. This financing will be processed under a Common Terms Agreement finalised on June 27, 2024.   The meeting further endorsed all earlier board decisions linked to the acquisition and financing. It also allowed the PTCL Board of Directors to complete all formalities, including regulatory approvals, legal steps and the appointment of advisors required to close the transaction s.  

Pakistan’s Large-Scale Manufacturing (LSM) sector recorded a 2.69% year-on-year increase in September, signalling a tentative recovery in industrial output after months of sluggish activity. The latest data, released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Wednesday, shows improvement compared to August, when production had slowed due to nationwide flooding. On a month-to-month basis, LSM grew by 2.05%, suggesting that the immediate impact of floods on factories and supply chains has started to ease. Officials noted that major industries have gradually resumed operations, helping stabilise output across sectors. During the first quarter of FY26 (July–September), the LSM sector posted a 4.08% year-on-year rise, driven largely by strong performance in the automobile and cement industries. The positive trend follows a strong start to the fiscal year, with 8.99% growth in July, before output dipped sharply to 0.54% in August due to flood disruptions. In contrast, FY25 saw overall LSM growth fall 0.74%, missing the government’s 3.5% target. The sector, which contributes nearly 8% to Pakistan’s GDP, had already contracted 0.03% in FY24, reflecting broader economic pressures. Key Sector-Wise Performance The food sector expanded by 6.94% in Q1 FY26, supported by improved wheat and rice milling, which rose 9.30%, while starch production edged up 0.64%. Cooking oil output increased 8.54%, though vegetable ghee dipped marginally by 0.06%, and blended tea fell 5.35%. The textile industry, which makes up the bulk of Pakistan’s exports, posted a modest 1.88% rise. Cotton yarn grew 2.62%, and cotton cloth increased 0.28%. However, September recorded a 2.18% decline in garment production, marking the second consecutive month of contraction for the value-added segment. The coke and petroleum sector shrank 3.35% in Q1. Output of petrol, jet fuel and furnace oil fell by 3.52%, 5.23% and 21.62% respectively. Meanwhile, high-speed diesel production jumped 10.83%, kerosene rose 11.17%, LPG 8.20%, and lubricating oil a significant 46.50%. The automobile sector emerged as the strongest performer, surging 84.58% in Q1 FY26. Production of cars and jeeps increased 86.19%, while trucks rose 139%, buses 21.43%, and LCVs 6.36%. Diesel engine production also improved 3.23%. The pharmaceutical sector contracted 4.81%, and fertiliser output registered a slight 0.97% rise. Iron and steel production fell 3.52%, with billets and ingots declining 10.20%, and H/CR sheets and coils dipping 0.75%. Among non-metallic industries, rubber products increased 14.10%, non-metallic minerals rose 13.86%, and electrical equipment grew 4%, offering pockets of resilience amid mixed overall industrial performance.

ISLAMABAD: Petrol prices in Pakistan are expected to come down from 1 December 2025, giving some relief to consumers for the next fortnight. According to official indications, the government is likely to announce a per-litre reduction in multiple petroleum products based on recent international market trends. Initial working by the authorities suggests that petrol may become cheaper by around Rs3.70 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) could see a cut of nearly Rs4.28 per litre. The price of kerosene oil is expected to drop by about Rs0.73 per litre, and light diesel oil may decrease by Rs6.35 per litre, subject to final approval. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will send its pricing summary to the Petroleum Division, which, along with the Ministry of Finance, will forward its recommendations to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The new fuel prices, once approved, will be notified on Sunday and will formally take effect from Monday, 1 December 2025. After the expected revision, petrol could be set at around Rs261.75 per litre, while the new rate of high-speed diesel may stand near Rs280.12 per litre. In the previous fortnightly review, the government had increased diesel prices by Rs6 per litre, while keeping the petrol price unchanged. Finland has announced that it will shut down its embassies in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Myanmar in 2026. The decision comes as part of Helsinki’s wider diplomatic review, aimed at adjusting its overseas presence according to changing political and economic conditions.   According to the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the closures are linked to operational and strategic reasons. Officials said the political situation in these countries and their limited commercial and economic ties with Finland were key factors behind the move.   The ministry confirmed that preparations for the shutdowns have already started and the embassies will close at different stages next year. The decision is part of Finland’s plan to focus its diplomatic resources on regions considered more critical to its foreign and security policy.   Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said the review is meant to help Finland build a “more competitive and efficient” global diplomatic network. She added that concentrating resources in priority areas will strengthen Finland’s long-term international position.   Finland had previously closed its mission in Islamabad in 2012 due to budget issues but reopened it in 2022. Pakistani citizens applying for UAE visas are increasingly facing refusal of applications, even when they submit complete documents and meet basic requirements. Applicants say rejection rates have climbed sharply in recent months, with many receiving no clear explanation for the decision.   The situation has become more confusing because Pakistani officials claim that visas are being issued only in very limited cases, while UAE authorities publicly state that there is no formal ban on Pakistanis. In practice, however, tourists, professionals and families report repeated denials that have disrupted travel, work and family plans.   A marketing professional from Lahore shared that two back-to-back refusals turned a simple holiday plan into months of anxiety. He was told informally that applicants “under 40” were facing stricter checks. Another applicant, employed by a multinational firm, said three visas for a conference were rejected before he finally obtained a so-called “guaranteed visa” at a higher fee. His separate $1,200 five-year multiple-entry visa application was still refused, leaving him with a financial loss.   Travel agencies in Karachi confirm a spike in refusals but offer different reasons. One agency estimates that 70–80% of first-time or single-entry visas are rejected, while family applications have a much higher approval rate. Another agent suggested that only around 20% of individual visas are being cleared, compared with close to 80% for family files.   Some consultants say stronger financial profiles appear to help, claiming that applicants with around Rs3 million in a six-month bank statement have better odds. Others link refusals to past overstays or unclear financial documentation. On social media, travellers report blocked transit visas, inconsistent guidance from visa centres and the sense that age, income level and profession all affect outcomes.   Recent official statements have deepened the uncertainty. A senior Pakistani interior ministry official told a Senate body that the UAE had stopped issuing most visa categories to Pakistani citizens, except for diplomatic and blue passports. In contrast, a UAE embassy diplomat told Dawn that there is no such restriction and that visas continue to be processed under a centralised system introduced after previous data tampering by some agents.   With conflicting accounts from both sides and no clearly defined criteria, many Pakistanis remain unsure how to prepare successful applications or when the UAE visa policy will become more predictable for ordinary travellers.

Small Business Saturday returned this weekend across the United States, with officials urging Americans to support local shops as holiday spending picks up. The nationwide event, held each year after Thanksgiving, encourages people to shift a part of their Christmas shopping toward small businesses.   According to the US Small Business Administration (SBA), this year’s campaign arrives at a time when the economy is recovering from a period of high inflation. SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler said the day plays an important role in helping the sector that forms the backbone of local communities. She noted that small businesses employ nearly half of the private-sector workforce and contribute almost half of the country’s GDP.   Loeffler said that buying from small shops means supporting workers, families and entrepreneurs who drive community growth. She urged Americans to stand with their neighbourhood businesses during the holiday season, adding that there has “never been a better time to shop small.”   The event was launched in 2010 by American Express and is now jointly promoted with the SBA. Airlines across the world faced cancellations and delays on Friday after Airbus ordered immediate repairs to 6,000 aircraft from its A320 family, affecting more than half of the global fleet. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency issued the directive as a precaution, saying that passenger safety remained the top priority.   The US Federal Aviation Administration also released an emergency airworthiness order for specific Airbus models, requiring the replacement or modification of certain software. According to a bulletin seen by Reuters, the main fix involves reverting to an older software version, while a smaller portion of jets will need a more complex hardware change.   The recall is considered one of the largest in Airbus’s 55-year history and follows weeks after the A320 overtook the Boeing 737 as the world’s most-delivered aircraft. At the time the notice was issued, nearly 3,000 A320-family planes were already in the air.   The decision affected airlines during the busy Thanksgiving weekend in the United States. Delta expected fewer than 50 A321neo aircraft to be impacted, while United Airlines said six planes required updates with limited disruptions. Thales, the system’s manufacturer, stated that the hardware meets Airbus specifications and that the affected functionality relates to software not under its responsibility.   The recall comes at a time when repair shops are already stretched due to labour shortages and ongoing inspections of other Airbus engines. Former Bangladesh prime minister Khaleda Zia has been shifted to intensive care after her health deteriorated in Dhaka, prompting her family and party leaders to appeal for prayers on Saturday. The 80-year-old politician was admitted to hospital on November 23 with symptoms linked to a lung infection.   Members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said she remains in a serious state. Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir told reporters on Friday night that doctors had informed them her condition was “very critical”. Senior BNP leaders and worried supporters gathered outside the hospital for updates throughout the day.   Reports in The Daily Star said Khaleda Zia is facing multiple medical complications including heart problems, liver and kidney issues, diabetes, lung disease and arthritis. She also has a permanent pacemaker and previously underwent a heart stenting procedure.   Her eldest son, Tarique Rahman, who has lived in London since 2008, requested the nation to pray for his mother’s recovery. In a social media post, he thanked the public for their support and said he wished he could be with her but was unable to return due to circumstances beyond his control.   Rahman said he shared “the same longing as any child” during a crisis, but noted that the decision to return home was not solely his to make. He has remained abroad for years due to legal and political disputes in Bangladesh.   Khaleda Zia, who served three terms as prime minister, was jailed for corruption in 2018 under the government of Sheikh Hasina. She was also barred from travelling abroad for medical treatment. She was released last year following Hasina’s ouster and has since continued to receive treatment in Dhaka.   Interim leader Muhammad Yunus issued a statement on Friday night, calling Zia “a source of inspiration” during the country’s transition back to democratic order. The Pakistan Cricket Board has approved a major rise in prize money for the Pakistan Super League, introducing new financial rewards that will take effect from the PSL 2026 season. The ICC has released the schedule for the T20 World Cup 2026, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka from 7 February to 8 March 2026. Pakistan will play all their matches in Colombo due to ongoing security concerns following recent tensions between the two neighbouring countries.   According to the schedule, Pakistan will begin their campaign on 7 February with a match against the Netherlands at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground. The tournament will open with three matches on the same day in Colombo. Pakistan’s next game will be against the USA on 10 February, a fixture that carries extra interest after Pakistan’s upset defeat to the American side in the last World Cup.   The most anticipated match of the group stage, Pakistan vs India, is set for 15 February at the R. Premadasa Stadium. The final group match for Pakistan will be played against Namibia on 18 February. Cloudflare said on Tuesday evening that it had fixed a widespread technical fault after a global outage disrupted access to major web services across several countries, including Pakistan. The company confirmed that its systems had stabilised, though some users continued to face login issues on its dashboard.   In an update posted at 7:42pm, Cloudflare stated that it had “implemented a fix” and believed the issue was resolved. The company added that it was monitoring error levels to ensure traffic returned to normal across its network, which handles around one-fifth of global web activity. A later advisory noted that some customers were still unable to sign into or use the Cloudflare dashboard, with engineers working to restore full functionality. Earlier disruptions across Cloudflare’s global network Reports of internet slowdowns and accessibility problems surfaced earlier in the day, with the company confirming disruptions across several regions. At 6:09pm, Cloudflare announced that it had restored normal error rates for users of Cloudflare Access and WARP, re-enabled WARP access in London, and continued efforts to bring other affected services back online. The company also said it was still working to restore application services for certain customers. Before the fix, Cloudflare reported widespread 500 errors, failures across its dashboard and API, and service interruptions affecting multiple large-scale clients. NetBlocks, a global internet observatory, said a broad range of online platforms were experiencing disruptions tied to Cloudflare’s network but stressed the problem was not connected to any national-level internet shutdowns. Impact on global platforms and users Outage tracker Downdetector showed a surge in user complaints from Pakistan beginning around 4:10pm, with issues also reported across platforms relying on Cloudflare’s infrastructure. Users globally reported difficulties accessing OpenAI, Amazon Web Services, Facebook, and other major services. Social platform X (formerly Twitter) also experienced a spike in outage reports, with more than 11,500 complaints logged by 6:41am ET, mostly from the United States. It was unclear whether X’s problems were directly linked to the Cloudflare incident. Neither Cloudflare nor X responded to Reuters’ requests for comment. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said it was monitoring the situation and coordinating with global service providers and local operators. The regulator said it would continue observing the incident until full services were restored. Background and context Cloudflare, whose shares fell about five per cent in premarket trading following the disruption, operates one of the world’s largest networks supporting the speed, security and uptime of websites and applications. The company has previously experienced major outages, including a “widespread outage” in June 2022 that also took multiple websites offline. A DNS server — one of the core services Cloudflare provides — works like an internet address book, connecting a website name such as google.com to its numerical IP address. Large-scale DNS providers must process massive volumes of traffic quickly to keep global internet access stable. The company says it will continue monitoring its systems closely until all affected users see normal performance restored.
