The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has launched SMEConnect, a centralised digital platform that will allow small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to apply for bank financing through a single online portal. From November 1, 2026, all SME financing applications must be submitted exclusively through the platform, the central bank announced on October 29, 2026.

What happened?

SMEConnect, available at smeconnect.sbp.org.pk, lets businesses apply for financing from banks and development finance institutions (DFIs) without navigating separate application processes at individual institutions. Applicants who visit bank branches or bank websites to apply for financing will now be directed to the portal instead.

Key details

  • From November 1, 2026, all SME financing applications will be received exclusively through SMEConnect.
  • Applicants can track the status of their loan applications in real time and, if an application is rejected, view the reasons.
  • The platform includes a live dashboard that gives the SBP real-time data on applications received, processed, approved, disbursed and rejected, at the level of individual banks and DFIs as well as across the industry.
  • The SBP has directed all banks and DFIs to display the SMEConnect link prominently on their websites and mobile applications, and to ensure their SME teams and field staff can guide applicants in using it. A tutorial video is available on the portal.
  • The SBP says the platform will streamline the application process and improve accessibility, efficiency and transparency in SME financing.
  • In July 2026, the SBP revised its SME financing definitions, setting annual sales turnover of up to Rs30 million for micro enterprises, above Rs30 million to Rs400 million for small enterprises, and above Rs400 million to Rs2 billion for medium enterprises.
  • State Bank Governor Jameel Ahmad told the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry on October 30 that the limit for collateral-free loans has been raised from Rs10 million to Rs50 million, and that the SME loan application form has been simplified to a single page in collaboration with SMEDA and banks.
  • Applying through the portal does not guarantee approval: each bank still assesses the applicant and decides on the application as before.

What it means for people in Pakistan

For small business owners, the change means one online door for bank credit instead of separate branch-by-branch paperwork, with the ability to follow an application and see why it was turned down. Businesses planning to borrow should check the SMEConnect portal before November 1, since branch applications will no longer be accepted on their own — while remembering that the final lending decision still rests with the bank.
