Pakistan Hosts UN Space Technology Conference on Early Warnings and Climate Action

Islamabad is hosting the United Nations–Pakistan International Conference on Leveraging Space Technology for Early Warning for All (EW4All), Climate Action and Disaster Risk Assessment from 27 to 31 October 2026, bringing international and Pakistani experts together to discuss how satellite data can strengthen warnings for climate-related disasters.

What happened?

The five-day conference is hosted by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) on behalf of the Government of Pakistan. It is co-sponsored by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) through its UN-SPIDER programme, the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO) and the Inter-Islamic Network on Space Sciences and Technology (ISNET).

Key details:

  • The conference runs from 27 to 31 October 2026 in Islamabad.
  • Around 200–250 participants are expected, including 60–70 international delegates and about 150 national participants.
  • Discussions will cover satellite observations, Earth observation data and geospatial technology for early warning systems, disaster risk assessment and climate action.
  • The programme also covers monitoring of water resources, agriculture, forests and environmental change, and hazards such as floods, droughts and heatwaves.
  • A separate international training course on space-based disaster management follows from 2 to 6 November 2026.
  • The conference is due to conclude on 31 October with a closing ceremony and a technical visit to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

What it means for people in Pakistan:

For communities that face floods, heatwaves and droughts, earlier and more accurate warnings can mean more time to prepare, protect crops and property, and move people out of harm’s way. The conference is about sharing satellite tools and experience so that warnings reach the people who need them sooner.

Pakistan Juniors Lose Sultan of Johor Cup Final to Malaysia in Penalty Shootout

Pakistan’s junior hockey team finished as runners-up at the Sultan of Johor Cup 2026 after hosts Malaysia won the final 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru on Saturday, October 24, 2026.

What happened?

Pakistan made a flying start, with Rana Waleed scoring from a penalty corner in the 19th minute and Muhammad Usman doubling the lead shortly after. Malaysia pulled one back through Muhammad Adam Johari’s penalty corner in the 25th minute, and Dheeressh Gunaseelan equalised from a penalty corner in the 49th minute. With neither side able to find a winner, the final went to a shootout, where Malaysia held their nerve to win 4-3. Hamza Fayyaz missed Pakistan’s opening attempt and Muhammad Ammad faltered in the fifth round, while Aferullsyah scored the decisive penalty for the hosts.

Key details

  • Pakistan reached the final after an 8-3 win over China, a 6-2 win over Canada, a narrow 3-2 defeat to Malaysia in the group stage, and a 2-2 draw with Japan, qualifying ahead of Japan on goals scored (18 to 16).
  • It was Pakistan’s first appearance in the tournament final in 10 years.
  • The title was Malaysia’s second since the tournament began in 2011 and their first since the inaugural edition, ending a 15-year wait.
  • The Pakistan Hockey Federation praised the players and coaching staff, calling the run to the final an encouraging development for junior hockey in the country.

What it means for people in Pakistan

For young hockey players and fans, a silver medal at a major junior tournament is a rare bright spot for the sport, and the team’s run to the final shows the junior pipeline can still compete with Asia’s best. The challenge now is turning junior promise into senior results.

Saim Ayub Steps Away from Pakistan Tri-Series Squad to Rebuild Batting Form

Pakistan opener Saim Ayub has been released from the national squad for the ongoing ODI tri-series at his own request, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced on Monday, October 26, 2026, so that he can return to domestic cricket and work on his batting form. Sahibzada Farhan has been named as his replacement for the remainder of the series.

What happened?

The PCB said Ayub requested the move after a conversation with head coach Mike Hesson, and that the team management and the national selection committee mutually agreed to accept it. The board’s statement said: “Respecting Saim’s decision and appreciating his honest assessment of his current form, the team management and national selection committee have mutually agreed to accept this request.”

Key details

  • Ayub, 24, has scored 6, 8 and 7 in his three innings in the tri-series.
  • He was dismissed for six in Pakistan’s one-wicket win over England at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on Sunday, a match in which the top order collapsed before Shadab Khan’s unbeaten 113 rescued the side.
  • Farhan, the newly appointed T20I captain, was not part of Pakistan’s original ODI tri-series squad.
  • Pakistan have already qualified for the final after winning their first three matches and remain the only unbeaten side.
  • Pakistan face Sri Lanka at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday, October 27, before the final on October 31.

What it means for people in Pakistan

For fans, the move is a reminder that even established young players can choose domestic cricket to rediscover form rather than carry a slump through a home series. It also opens an ODI opportunity for Farhan, whose recent T20 form earned him the T20I captaincy, and it keeps the spotlight on Pakistan’s top order ahead of the final.

Pakistan Switches to E-Passports Only as Machine-Readable Passports End

From 23 October 2026, Pakistan and its diplomatic missions abroad are issuing only e-passports for new passport applications and renewals, after the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGI&P) discontinued the issuance of machine-readable passports (MRPs).

What happened?

The 22-year-old machine-readable passport system has been phased out, and all passport offices across Pakistan and Pakistani diplomatic missions abroad are now issuing only e-passports. An earlier date of 15 October for ending MRP issuance was later extended, and MRP applications and renewals remained available until 22 October.

Key details

  • Citizens who already hold a machine-readable passport can keep using it until its expiry date and do not need to replace it immediately just because of the change.
  • Once an existing MRP expires, it will not be renewed as a machine-readable document, and the holder will have to apply for an e-passport instead.
  • E-passports contain an electronic chip that stores the holder’s personal and biometric information, and the authorities say the technology is intended to improve identity verification and reduce forgery.
  • Pakistan began issuing e-passports in March 2022, initially for diplomats and residents of Islamabad, and in August 2023 all citizens were given the option of choosing between an MRP and an e-passport.
  • Machine-readable passports themselves date back to 2004 and replaced handwritten passports.

What it means for people in Pakistan

Anyone applying for a new passport or renewing an expiring one will now receive an e-passport, so applicants should plan for the e-passport process rather than expecting an MRP. Holders of a valid MRP do not need to rush to replace it, but they should check how much validity remains, since many destinations require a passport to be valid for several months beyond a trip. Before applying, confirm the current fees and procedure with the relevant passport office or Pakistani diplomatic mission.

Faisalabad Startup O’PASTA Wins Global Startup of the Year at World Food Forum in Rome

O’PASTA, a startup from the National Incubation Center (NIC) Faisalabad, has won the Global Startup of the Year title at the Startup Innovation Awards of the World Food Forum, held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome. The win, reported on 26 October 2026, also saw the startup take the Fighting Malnutrition category award, giving it two honours in one evening.

What happened?

The awards are run with MassChallenge Switzerland. O’PASTA competed against more than 800 startups from 100 countries, and the field was narrowed to eight finalists who pitched live in Rome on 14 October. Founder and Chief Executive Officer Maryam Siddique presented the startup in Rome. Before the finals, the team took part in a mentorship programme in Switzerland, where it gained insight into European regulations and the regional startup ecosystem and mapped out a plan for expansion across Europe.

Key details

  • O’PASTA won both the Startup of the Year title and the Fighting Malnutrition and Enhancing Food Security category award.
  • Under the awards’ prize structure, each category winner receives 7,500 dollars, and the Startup of the Year receives an additional 10,000 dollars to scale its work.
  • The startup is developing a food innovation designed to address nutrition and food security challenges in Pakistan.
  • The National Incubation Center Faisalabad is funded by Ignite and the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and focuses on agriculture technology and related fields.

What it means for people in Pakistan

For young founders and students in food and agriculture, the win is a practical example that a locally rooted idea can reach a global stage and win against hundreds of international competitors. The prize money and the mentorship connections give O’PASTA room to grow, and the attention may encourage more support for agrifood startups working on nutrition and food security at home. The real test now is turning the award into a product that reaches people and markets beyond the competition.

Systems Limited Revenue Jumps 29% to Rs26.78 Billion in Third Quarter of 2026

Pakistan’s largest listed technology company, Systems Limited, reported a sharp rise in revenue in the third quarter of 2026, with sales climbing 29% year on year to Rs26.78 billion, according to a result review issued on October 26, 2026.

What happened?

Systems Limited, listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange as SYS, announced its results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Consolidated profit after tax rose 9% year on year to Rs3.03 billion, with earnings per share of Rs1.98, the review by Topline Securities said.

Key details

  • Net sales rose 29% year on year, from Rs20.68 billion in the same quarter last year to Rs26.78 billion.
  • Sales in the Middle East rose 26% and sales in North America rose 41%, with the Confiz acquisition helping drive growth in North America.
  • Gross margin fell to 25% in the quarter, from around 30% a year earlier, as margins declined across most regions, while the domestic segment’s gross margin improved to 21% from 16%.
  • Operating profit fell 7.5% year on year to Rs3.20 billion, as thinner margins and higher costs offset the revenue growth, while profit before tax rose 7% to Rs3.37 billion.
  • Selling and distribution expenses rose 26% year on year to Rs966 million and administrative expenses rose 44% to Rs2.33 billion.
  • For the nine months ended September 30, 2026, consolidated net profit rose 14% to Rs9.08 billion, on net revenue of Rs76.49 billion, up from Rs57.42 billion a year earlier.

What it means for people in Pakistan

Systems Limited is one of Pakistan’s flagship exporters of software and IT services, so a strong quarter for its overseas business is a positive sign for the country’s technology exports and for skilled jobs in the sector. At the same time, the squeeze on margins shows that growth is coming with higher costs, something investors and employees will watch in the next quarter. For young graduates looking at technology careers, the company’s continued expansion in the Middle East and North America underlines where demand for Pakistani software talent is coming from.

Pakistan Pitches Trade and Investment at World Investment Forum 2026 in Doha

Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan is representing Pakistan at the ninth World Investment Forum (WIF) 2026 in Doha, held from October 25 to 27, to bolster international trade and investment.

What happened?

The forum, themed “Investing in the Future,” is organised in partnership with the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the State of Qatar. It brings together ministers, senior government officials, global investors, sovereign wealth funds, business leaders and representatives of international organisations to discuss emerging investment opportunities and strategies for sustainable economic development.

Key details

  • Forum focus areas: artificial intelligence, infrastructure, energy, sustainable finance, entrepreneurship, climate resilience and special economic zones.
  • Bilateral meetings: the Minister met H.E. Mustafa Tuzcu, Deputy Minister of Trade of the Republic of Türkiye; Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani, Chairman of the Qatar Businessmen Association; and Eng. Ali Hilal Al-Kuwari, Chief Executive Officer of Hassad Food.
  • With Türkiye: discussions prioritised expanding bilateral trade, promoting investment and identifying new cooperation opportunities in agriculture, food security, energy, minerals, manufacturing and technology, plus enhancing regional connectivity for smoother supply chains.
  • With Qatar: discussions explored expanding trade, investment and economic cooperation, and the Minister invited Hassad Food to attend FoodAg 2026 in Karachi to further develop agribusiness and food security cooperation.

What it means for people in Pakistan

For exporters and businesses, forums like this are about opening doors: new trade and investment links with Türkiye and Qatar could mean more export orders, joint ventures and investment in sectors from agriculture to technology. Concrete outcomes will depend on follow-up after the meetings, including whether the FoodAg invitation and the bilateral discussions turn into agreements and orders.

VYU Launches in Pakistan as Video-First Fashion Shopping Platform

VYU, a video-first Entertainment Commerce platform, has launched in Pakistan, with its launch-day livestream reaching 4.5 million live views across Facebook, Instagram and YouTube as of 9:00 PM PKT on October 24.

What happened?

VYU is built around what it calls Entertainment Commerce: shoppers watch styling content, celebrity segments and fashion discussions, then buy the featured products directly from the video, without leaving the content to shop somewhere else.

Key details

  • Launch stream: a six-hour celebrity-led livestream featuring Bushra Ansari and Ron & Coco, sharing styling tips, fashion advice and personal anecdotes.
  • Reach: 4.5 million live views across Facebook, Instagram and YouTube as of 9:00 PM PKT on October 24.
  • At launch: women’s fashion from a range of brands across clothing, footwear, handbags and accessories.
  • Operator: The Shopping Stream LLP, founded in 2026 by Farzana Sheikh and Afraz Siddiqui.
  • Available at: vyucart.com.
  • Founder framing: “Shopping has always been about more than buying products. It is about discovering new styles, finding inspiration, and enjoying the experience,” said Farzana Sheikh, Co-Founder of VYU. “Pakistanis already discover fashion through video and creators, but they still have to leave that content to go shop somewhere else. VYU closes that gap,” said Afraz Siddiqui, Co-Founder of VYU.

What it means for people in Pakistan

For shoppers, VYU turns an already familiar habit — discovering fashion through video and creators — into a one-stop purchase, which could make online fashion shopping quicker and more engaging. For local fashion brands and creators, it opens a new sales channel built on content rather than search listings. Whether shoppable video scales beyond a launch-day splash will depend on whether viewers keep coming back to buy, not just to watch.
