Alibaba Group announced on October 31, 2026, that its Qwen artificial intelligence model will power parts of Apple Intelligence for iPhone users in China, with testing in the latest iOS developer beta from November 4 and a public rollout with iOS 27.3 in December.

What happened?

Under the partnership, Qwen will be integrated into Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence for users in China, covering text and image understanding as well as content generation. Apple announced the timing on its China newsroom: testing starts November 4 in the developer beta, and the features reach users in China with the official iOS 27.3 release in December.

Alibaba said user requests and generated responses will not be used to train its models, and users can choose whether to enable the Qwen integration and what information to share. Access will be available to users who bought an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone in China, or whose device location and Apple Account country or region are both set to China. Apple’s China release notes that the update does not include Siri AI or the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features announced at WWDC 2026.

Key details

  • Announced: October 31, 2026, by Alibaba Group; reported by Xinhua from Hangzhou.
  • Testing: latest iOS developer beta, starting November 4, 2026.
  • Public rollout: December 2026, with iOS 27.3.
  • Features covered: Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, including asking Qwen about photos and documents and a Compose option in Writing Tools for original content.
  • Privacy terms: Alibaba says requests and responses sent to Qwen through Apple Intelligence will not be used for model training, and participation is opt-in.
  • Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said Qwen will draw on Alibaba’s AI expertise to integrate deeply into experiences across the Apple ecosystem.
  • Apple Intelligence was first unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in 2024; in July 2026, China’s cyberspace authority completed the regulatory filing of seven on-device generative AI services for smartphones, including Apple Intelligence.

What it means for people in Pakistan

Pakistani iPhone users are not covered by this rollout, which applies only to devices and accounts set to China — but the deal matters here too. It shows how the world’s biggest phone makers now pair with local AI models to enter regulated markets, a pattern Pakistan is watching as it builds its own Urdu-language AI and sovereign computing plans. It also puts Alibaba’s Qwen, a model family already popular with developers in Asia, at the centre of one of the largest phone ecosystems in the world.
