The benchmark KSE-100 Index fell 1,494.09 points, or 0.85 per cent, to close at 173,885.77 on Friday, November 6, 2026, a day after crossing the 175,000 mark, as investors booked profits and a sharp sell-off in global technology stocks weighed on sentiment.

What happened?

Selling pressure returned to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Friday after several sessions of strong gains. The index lost more than 2,200 points in the opening minutes, falling to 173,146.07 by 9:40am, down 2,233.79 points or 1.27 per cent, before recovering some ground to close at 173,885.77.

Key details

  • On Thursday, the KSE-100 had gained 3,366.38 points, or 1.96 per cent, to close at 175,379.87, after jumping nearly 3,995 points on Wednesday.
  • Brokerage house Ismail Iqbal Securities had expected investors to take profits following the recent rally, and to book gains ahead of the long weekend, with the market closed on Monday, November 9, for Iqbal Day.
  • Persistent geopolitical uncertainties and a lack of progress in peace negotiations were also cited as weighing on investor sentiment.
  • Global markets faced renewed pressure on Friday: the Nasdaq plunged 5.5 per cent on Thursday into correction territory, the S&P 500 fell 4.36 per cent, wiping around $3 trillion in market value, while South Korea’s KOSPI dropped more than 8 per cent, triggering a circuit breaker, Japan’s Nikkei fell 6 per cent and Taiwan’s market declined more than 8 per cent.
  • On the PSX, 337 shares rose, 145 fell and 38 were unchanged, with the index pulled down by a few large companies despite more gainers than losers.

What it means for people in Pakistan

For investors, Friday’s fall is a pause after a record-setting run rather than a reversal of the broader trend, as the index remains close to its all-time highs. For savers invested through mutual funds, short-term swings of this kind are normal after sharp rallies. The watchpoint now is whether global technology stocks stabilise, since the sell-off abroad set the tone for the day’s trading in Karachi.
