The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) injected a total of Rs13.76 trillion into the banking system through conventional and Shariah-compliant open market operations (OMOs) on Friday, November 6, 2026, to meet banks’ liquidity needs.

What happened?

The central bank conducted reverse repo and Shariah-compliant Modarabah-based open market operations on Friday, supplying short-term funds to banks and primary dealers against eligible securities.

Key details

  • The central bank injected Rs13.36 trillion through conventional reverse repo OMOs, accepting bids worth Rs307.9 billion for the seven-day tenor and Rs13.05 trillion for the 14-day tenor.
  • For both conventional tenors, the SBP set the accepted rate at 12.01 per cent. The offered rates ranged between 12.01 per cent and 12.08 per cent.
  • The SBP injected a further Rs402.5 billion through Shariah-compliant Modarabah-based OMOs, accepting bids worth Rs402.5 billion for the 14-day tenor at an accepted rate of 12.04 per cent.
  • All bids worth Rs150 billion for the seven-day Modarabah tenor were rejected. Total bids received for the 14-day Modarabah tenor were worth Rs461 billion.

What it means for people in Pakistan

Open market operations are the central bank’s routine tool for supplying short-term funds when banks face liquidity shortages, and for withdrawing funds when the system has a surplus. The injection, priced just above the 12 per cent policy rate, keeps money-market conditions orderly as banks meet their funding needs. The operation itself has no direct effect on ordinary deposits or loans, but it is part of how the central bank keeps the banking system running smoothly.
