The International Monetary Fund’s Executive Board will meet in December to approve a $1.2 billion disbursement for Pakistan, with the money expected to reach the country shortly after approval, reports said on 8 November 2026.

What happened?
The IMF board is scheduled to meet on 8 December to approve the disbursement, under the staff-level agreement reached with Pakistan in October. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb confirmed during the outgoing week that the board meeting would be held in December. The disbursement is expected to land in Pakistan’s account on 9 December.

Key details

  • The $1.2 billion comprises about $1.0 billion (SDR 760 million) under the Extended Fund Facility and about $210 million (SDR 154 million) under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility.
  • Once approved, total disbursements under the two arrangements will reach about $5.7 billion.
  • The staff-level agreement followed discussions held in Karachi and Islamabad from 23 September to 7 October 2026, covering the fourth review of the 37-month Extended Fund Facility and the third review of the 28-month Resilience and Sustainability Facility, along with the 2026 Article IV consultation.
  • Before the board meeting, Pakistan is expected to publish the much-delayed Governance and Corruption Diagnostic Assessment report prepared by an IMF technical mission.
  • The inflow will further strengthen foreign exchange reserves, which stood at $26,864.5 million in total liquid reserves as of 30 October 2026, including $21,561.2 million held by the State Bank of Pakistan.

What it means for people in Pakistan
Board approval is the final step before the money is released, following the staff-level agreement reached in October. The $1.2 billion will add to Pakistan’s record foreign exchange reserves and give the government more room to meet external payments. For ordinary people, steadier reserves help keep the rupee stable and support confidence in the economy.
