Pakistan and Singapore have agreed to deepen economic cooperation and explore the possible resumption of direct flights, as Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan visited Islamabad on October 30, 2026, for talks with Pakistan’s leadership.

What happened?

Balakrishnan held separate meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, as the two countries mark 60 years of diplomatic relations. Dar and Balakrishnan held delegation-level talks followed by a joint press conference, where both sides discussed expanding trade and investment and the possible resumption of direct flights.

Key details

  • The two sides discussed the possible resumption of direct flights between Pakistan and Singapore to facilitate business travel and closer people-to-people contact; no dates or operational details have been announced yet.
  • Areas of cooperation identified include the digital economy, financial technology, infrastructure, logistics, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the services sector.
  • Both sides agreed to encourage business delegations, strengthen links between chambers of commerce and promote closer private-sector engagement.
  • The reopening of Pakistan’s Trade and Investment Office at its High Commission in Singapore was also discussed.
  • The two countries exchanged a memorandum of understanding between Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority and Singapore’s Civil Defence Force, covering joint training, early warning and search-and-rescue cooperation.
  • Other areas discussed included education, research, innovation, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, agriculture and climate-related initiatives, and carbon markets.
  • Balakrishnan’s visit is the first by a Singaporean foreign minister to Pakistan in more than two decades.

What it means for people in Pakistan

For Pakistani businesses and travellers, the talks point to easier business links with Singapore and, if direct flights return, a shorter and simpler journey between the two countries. Stronger SME and chamber-to-chamber links could also open new export and partnership opportunities for small businesses.
